It’s on now! It’s off now! Which one am I?

It’s officially summertime now and already the pools and the beaches are filling up.

Families often fall into one of two categories as far as any type of planning goes, whether it be Financial Planning or College Planning.

Category 1: “Talk to me when the summer is over, we are going on vacation for 3 months”

Category 2: “Let’s get something done while my son/daughter does not have such a hectic schedule”

Category

For the upcoming senior students – Many families will be doing College Tours and talking about where to apply. From the minute you get back to school, you will only have one or two months to get many of your applications and essays completed and then the wait for acceptance and offers starts.

For the upcoming Junior students – The pressure is starting to mount for you and your parents. My bet is that if you ask those going into their Senior year now, they would tell you to get more done in your Junior year as you only have 15 months to go before your applications are in. What with busy sporting and other activity schedules, many juniors find it hard to find time to do their college planning during the school year and could have an opportunity to start assessments and talks about career options and “Money Strengths” during the summer.

For these parents, you have to have all of your financial planning done to maximize the FAFSA EFC calculation completed for the 2016 Tax year before the end of December so planning now is pretty crucial.

For the upcoming Sophomore parents – We addressed many of you earlier this year about starting college planning while your student was a freshman! I know, I know, time flies.

This might be a good time to decide which of the two categories you will be in during the summer:

Category 1 – I have had enough, we are taking a rest and talk with me after the vacation is over.

Category 2 – Let’s put a date on the schedule to talk so that I can use this opportunity while my student is not that busy.

There is a list of possibilities for families that would like to get some things accomplished during the summer.

  • Strengths Assessments
  • Career Discussions
  • Essay Prep
  • SAT / ACT Prep
  • Parents Financial Planning for College and Retirement
  • Shadowing
  • Community Service
  • Career Interviews
  • Internships
  • Financial Planning for College

Whether you are a Category 1 or Category 2, either way, we hope that you enjoy the summer!
