Growing up in Africa, I have been fortunate to have experienced being on safari many times.
One of the most common and beautiful animals in Southern Africa is the Impala. Impala’s would be described in America as a type of gazelle that could reach about 3 feet tall and weigh anything from 88 – 168 pounds.
In full flight, the impala is just a magnificent sight and can jump 13 feet high and 30 feet far. It’s a really tough animal to catch – even by a lion or cheetah.
Despite this incredible leaping and jumping ability, it’s an entirely different story though when an impala is in a zoo. In the zoo, they are often kept in by a 3 foot wall or solid fence. The reason for this is that Impala’s will not risk a jump if they cannot see where they will land – so they remain captive.
So often we get stuck in jobs or careers or situations because we have not been shown a vision of where we might land if we were allowed to be who we were really made to be in life. Our job as parents if often to mentor our kids to give them a vision of where they might be able to land in life. Sometimes it could be a “Safe” jump and other times it might be “Giant” jump to reach the moon.
As a parent, I know that we would do anything to protect our kids. Sometimes though we should perhaps let them grow strong so that they could defend themselves or see a way to leap and jump as best they could.
As we plan for College and Retirement, it is important to get a vision of where we are now, what we have to work with, and where we would like to land, and what the most efficient way is to get where we would like to land safely.
To Do: Can I start by identifying 3 things that I would like to do / achieve before my retirement years? How about writing them down and develop a plan to move in that direction?
One more thing – one of the students that we have worked with on College Planning has a vision of where she would like to land. Amanda daily overcomes some challenges and we can help her achieve her dreams simply by clicking on the link to her story. Let’s encourage her to achieve her vision be clicking on AMANDA’s STORY
