FAFSA and Student Loan News

FAFSA 2025-26

The rollout of the new FAFSA software last year was pretty much a disaster and everyone was hoping that things would be back on track this year.

Usually, October 1st is the start date for new FAFSA applications.

Unfortunately, there will be very limited availability to complete applications then. The full launch is scheduled to only start on 1st December this year.

The DOE has announced only a “Soft” launch on October 1st with minimal accessibility to a small pilot group. The 1st December date assumes no significant bugs are discovered and the number of users will increase incrementally from Oct 1st to Dec 1st.

Should this goal be achieved, the admission process will return to a typical timeline for rolling and regular admissions. If applying for early decision, please check with the schools for deadlines and forms needed.

Hopefully, these changes will not drag on like they did for last year’s applications.

The Supreme Court refuses to reinstate the $475 Billion Student Loan Relief Program

In 2023 the Supreme Court struck down the current administration’s Student Loan Forgiveness program.

The administration gave it a 2nd shot by launching the Student Loan Relief program.

The Supreme Court on Aug. 28 turned down President Joe Biden’s request to reinstate a $475 billion student loan relief plan weeks after an Appeals Court blocked the program. The circuit court’s sweeping, nationwide injunction temporarily prevents the federal government from forgiving principal or interest on outstanding student loans, blocks a provision halting interest from being calculated on loans, and pauses a provision allowing borrowers to make very low or zero monthly payments geared to income.

The Appeals Court blocked the program while the case continues on its merits, the current administration tried to bypass the appeals court by going directly to the Supreme Court, and they have now sent it back to the Appeals Court for that process to be completed.
